Faith Devapalan

Richmond

Faith Devapalan comes from a family of musicians and started playing the piano when she was just 3 years old. She started teaching the piano when she was 15 and has been doing so for more than 20 years. Faith pursued her music education through the Trinity College of Music in London and continued at VCU. After that, Faith pursued many degrees in education and teaching, including an education specialist degree in teaching and school administration.

As a musician, Faith has composed a variety of music and musicals that were performed in many countries. She was also the music director and pianist for her church for 16 years. As a school music teacher, Faith directed many spring and Christmas musicals. In addition to all this, she has taught and performed as a pianist around the world. Though she is currently the vice principal of Dominion Academy, she continues to teach piano because of her love for music.

Faith has experience teaching students from age 3 to 93. She has trained more than 1,000 students, most of whom are now church pianists, worship leaders, performers, and music teachers themselves.

Faith enjoys playing both classical and contemporary music, though she teaches practically all styles. Her passion is to help her students become passionate about music. In addition to teaching her students to play, she also encourages them to compose their own music as a part of their learning process. In her experience, every student she’s taught was able to play, able to enjoy the instrument and, when they stuck with the program, able to become proficient at it. She believes that everyone can learn to play an instrument and that music is the universal language that brings people together.
