Al Mermelstein

Richmond

Al Mermelstein first fell in love with the accordion as a young boy while watching a sightless man play outside of a 5 & 10 cent store in Troy, New York. Back in the day he would stand quietly outside of the store while his mother shopped.

His toy accordion out lived the novelty stage and was finally replaced when a knock at the door was from an accordion teacher who was recruiting new students. This ws the start of Al’s formal lessons which were followed by 2 more instructors one of which was listed in the book of the best accordionist in the world.

Al has played for over 50 years in many venues including senior citizen facilities, with Blue Royals his band, and the Jerry Lewis cerebral palsy telethon.

His love for the accordion is only matched by his love of teaching, Being able to watch the growth and love of the accordion forming in a student is really what inspires Al.
